You may have noticed that I love encountering lizards in all their fascinating forms, but none excite me quite as much as the Collared Lizards that are scattered throughout Canyon Country. Their striking colors and bold, inquisitive behavior make them a dream subject for any photographer. When they spot humans, it’s not uncommon for them to scamper up the tallest rock or branch - almost as if they’re posing. And if you're lucky, you might catch them doing push-ups, a dramatic display used to defend territory or attract a mate.
Rhonda and I came across these two beauties in Butler Wash while heading home from a weekend camping trip. They were noticeably different in size - the lizard in the first three photos was significantly larger than the one in the last three. Based on their vivid coloration, I suspect both are males.
